The Tai-Chi program is taught by Sensei Cathy Walker. Cathy is a 2nd degree black belt in karate and a Reiki master. She has studied the internal art of Tai Chi for 8 years and continues her studies with Sifu Chi Wai Lee.
The Tai-Chi program is approached from both a health and martial arts aspect. Beginners begin with the Yang style short form and move on to learn a series of Chi Kung exercises and a longer, more in depth form called Dan Lu Taijiquan (Daon Lou Taai Gik Kuen). The speed is steady and movements flow continuously. Yang Style is simple: Using Jing (internal power) is like drawing silk from a cocoon. Breathing is natural and enhances the flow of Chi (vital energy stream) to the lower dantien (the place about one and a half inches below the navel).
HBK Martial Arts students will move on to learn various weapons based on the Yang style, such as the long sword, broadsword, staff, spear, and fan. During this time students are also learning the martial application of their forms, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of the form and their own bodies in regards to balance, co-ordination, energy movement, and body alignment.
Yang style practice is simple, neat, and more suitable for all ages and health conditions than many other styles. Yang style of Tai-Chi has a simple structure, yet in some ways, it’s also elaborate. Its body posture is centrally balanced—not leaning towards any sides. Its movements are soft, stately, full and round, smooth, with combined soft and hard movements, agile, light, and steady. Practice entails transitions from loose to soft, and soft gradually becoming hard, and then soft and hard together. Its frame has high, middle, and low stances. Which stance Yang style practitioners choose to use depends on the age, gender, weaknesses, or strength of the practitioner. Yang style Tai Chi can also be used for physical therapy, rehabilitation, and faster recovery from sickness. Continued practice adds strength and improvement to the practitioner’s technique. Correct Yang Style Tai Chi practice expresses its lordly, majestic, and graceful appearance.
